"This is a piece of coal. It is heated wood. It has no other qualities than a very high percentage of the element of carbon. It is very common and very very cheap.
This is activated carbon. It is ground, fine dust of carbon. Exactly the same as above, only ground to dust. And cheap.
The carbon dust is called ‘activated’ carbon for the simple reason that is has so much surface, relative to its volumen. The molecules of carbon will grab onto whatever tiny molecules pass their way, at least until the surface of the carbon is satiated. With such a large surface area relative to its volumen, the carbon dust is a simple and effective way of purifying water. You lead water through the carbon dust, and the dust will suck up particles from the water. When the surface of the carbon dust is satiated, you discard the carbon.
Now, there are people in this world who will tell you that you should buy a stick of heated wood (the first picture) and put it in a glass of water, then the water will be purified. You dont even have to stir the water, the stick ‘sucks up’ all the little germs and heavy metals and pesticides from your tap water. It’s true, really. You can put it in the fridge, too, it will clean it by sucking up all impurities and germs. The same people charge good money for the burnt stick, too. And of course they should, when it works such wonders. They call it ‘activated carbon’. Oh, and if the stick is bamboo (a cheap and common material), then the stick works much better and so it costs a lot more, as it should of course."
